Two Connecticut businesses are among three in New England that recently agreed to pay penalties to settle claims by the Environmental Protection Agency that they violated federal law by failing to file required annual pesticide production reports.
Ferti Technologies CT Corp. in Wallingford, which produces fertilizer, and Exoban LLC, which provides commercial cleaning services, were accused of violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, which regulates pesticide production and use in the United States, according to the EPA.
Exoban advertises that it has patent-pending antimicrobial and antiviral treatment solutions.
Both companies failed to file production reports for the reporting year 2021, and were issued warnings, according to the EPA.
However, they again failed to file production reports for the reporting year 2022, so EPA took enforcement action.
The penalties, based in part on the size of each company, were $1,000 for Ferti and $500 for Exoban.
A third company, Seaman Paper Company of Massachusetts Inc., from Gardner, Massachusetts, was fined $1,400.
EPA requires that companies that produce pesticides submit annual production reports by March 1, for the preceding calendar year.Â
EPA regulates all pesticide products used in the U.S. to ensure that uses described on product labels can be used without harming people’s health or the environment, according to the agency.
