Tweed-New Haven Airport has been awarded an $11.3 million federal grant to help fund infrastructure upgrades and improve passenger experience.
The funding, through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, will support construction of a new 35,600-square-yard terminal apron, allowing the airport to accommodate increased aircraft operations.
Officials say the project is part of a broader, multi-phase investment in the airport’s infrastructure and long-term growth. The apron expansion will improve aircraft parking and maneuvering space near the terminal, supporting increased service and reducing delays, officials said.
“Expanding the new terminal apron capacity allows us to safely and efficiently accommodate more aircraft, improve operational flow, and continue building a modern airport that meets the needs of airlines as we focus on tomorrow’s growth,” said Robert Reed, chair of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority.
Last month, the Airport Authority published a memorandum of understanding providing a framework to address concerns about its controversial planned runway expansion and new terminal building.
The MOU between the authority and New Haven, East Haven and airport operator Avports considered traffic and parking issues and environmental concerns, among other aspects.
Many neighbors of the airport, which sits in a residential district in East Haven, have long opposed its expansion plans.
