Tweed Airport expansion up for debate at virtual hearing Tuesday

The $100 million plan to expand the runway and build a new terminal at Tweed New Haven Airport is the subject of a virtual public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday on Zoom.

Those who wish to attend or speak at the hearing must register via the Tweed Master Plan website at tweedmasterplan.com.

The virtual hearing represents one of the final opportunities for public input on a draft environmental assessment prepared by FAA consultants, which gave the green light to the expansion citing minimal impact on surrounding neighborhoods and wetlands.

The final deadline for comment on the report is May 1, with a decision by the FAA expected within months after that.

Neighborhood groups and East Haven lawmakers have attacked the report as downplaying the noise, traffic and pollution caused by expanded operations at Tweed due to the growth of Avelo Airlines. The airport property straddles the East Haven and New Haven border.

Business groups including the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce have urged members to speak up in favor of the airport expansion.

“We need the business community to show their support,” reads a recent Chamber email to members. “The business community will see the impacts of economic growth on our region, and these impacts will be felt by the community at large.”

Avelo, which has made Tweed its Northeast hub, marked its one-millionth passenger in New Haven last month and recently announced expanded service from the airport to 17 destinations as of June.
