Trumbull’s CooperSurgical acquires CA medical device company

Trumbull-based CooperSurgical has continued its buying spree with the purchase of a California company that has developed a device to treat  heavy menstrual bleeding.

The maker of women’s health care products announced Tuesday that it has acquired Aegea Medical and its FDA-approved Mara Water Vapor Ablation System.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration last March, the Mara uses water vapor to destroy the lining of the uterus, the source of heavy bleeding for women who have not reached menopause, according to the company.

The procedure takes two minutes and can be done in a doctor’s office, the company said.

A clinical study of 155 women found the procedure reduced menstrual bleeding and improved quality of life in nearly all participants one year after treatment.

The company said 91% reported they were satisfied or very satisfied with the procedure, and 93% said they’d recommend it to a friend.

This is the second acquisition deal CooperSurgical has announced since the beginning of the year.

The company in early January acquired Illinois-based Embryo Options, which helps fertility clinics educate patients on how to manage frozen embryos, eggs and sperm.

The wholly-owned subsidiary of California-based CooperCompanies manufactures and markets a wide array of products and services for use by women’s health care clinicians.
