Trinity College’s Dream Camp kicked off its 2009 season on June 29 with more than 250 Hartford children ages six to 16 arriving on campus for the five-week summer program that runs through July 31.
Now in its 12th season, the summer camp and year-round academic mentoring program nurtures participating elementary school through high school students in a supportive, safe environment. The camp has an annual return rate of greater than 95 percent. Trinity College students serve as tutors and mentors throughout the academic year, and many remain on campus as Dream Camp counselors during the summer. About 25 percent of Dream Camp staff members are former campers.
TD Banknorth, through the TD Charitable Foundation, recently donated a total of $66,000 to several local organizations in Hartford County as part of the bank’s commitment to giving back to the community.
Approximately $75,000 was raised at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center’s “For the Children… New Frontiers in IBD Research” benefit which took place April 4 at the Hartford Club. The proceeds from the event will help advance a cutting-edge research agenda dedicated to finding new therapies and ultimately searching for a cure for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease. Connecticut Children’s is home to the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease which is the largest clinical program for children with IBD in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Western Massachusetts.
Hands On Hartford, a Hartford-based volunteer action center and social services agency, ushered in the official start of summer with Summer Solstice: The Longest Day of Service, June 19-21. The three-day event included more than 400 volunteers working on a variety of service projects at 12 organizations throughout Hartford. Volunteer opportunities included distributing food and clothing to the poor and hungry; upgrading the schools, shelters and other institutions that serve Hartford; and landscaping and restoring community spaces and scenic locales. Participating nonprofit recipients included:
Church Street Eats, Leadership Greater Hartford, Foodshare, Hands On Hartford, Hartford Public Schools, Immaculate Conception Shelter, Knox Parks Foundation, My Sister’s Place Inc., Rebuilding Together Hartford, Riverfront Recapture, South Park Inn and Youth United for Survival.
