Hartford-based Trinity Health–New England is replacing more than 9,000 light fixtures at three of its five hospitals — St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford, and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs — to shave almost $400,000, or 5 percent, off the three facilities’ combined annual electric bills.
Replacing existing fixtures with energy efficient microprocessor controlled LED fixtures throughout hallways, conference rooms and common space will save the three hospitals more than 2 million kilowatt-hours annually, Trinity Health said.
The $1.6 million replacement project, now in its final stages, was offset by more than $800,000 of incentives from Eversource.
The light fixtures are programmable to reduce lighting brightness by 66 percent when hallways, conference rooms and other areas are not in use, adding to additional savings. When hallways are busy with pedestrian traffic, the light brightness increases.
The light-replacement program follows installation of a rooftop solar array at St. Francis in September that it expects to yield more than $600,000 over the next two decades.
Trinity Health-New England also comprises St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury and Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. Lighting upgrades are planned there, too, at some point.
