Trinity College

Mission: Trinity College is a community united in a quest for excellence in liberal arts education. The school’s purpose is to foster critical thinking, free the mind of parochialism and prejudice, and prepare students to lead examined lives that are personally satisfying, civically responsible, and socially useful.

Background: Founded in 1823, Trinity is an independent, nonsectarian college that is firmly grounded in the liberal arts tradition. With its 38 majors and broad array of interdisciplinary programs, the college combines classroom instruction and research with experiential, hands-on learning in an urban setting.

Students can enroll in classes through the Community Learning Initiative; participate in research projects at Hartford Hospital and other nonprofits; engage in a range of corporate and legislative internships; and commit to community service.

Trinity’s Center for Urban and Global Studies is the first center at a liberal arts college to have an integrated urban-global focus. One of its goals is to build bridges between Hartford and Trinity’s programs in cities such as Rome, Paris, Barcelona, and Shanghai.

The full-time undergraduate student body consists of 2,240 students. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1, the heart of Trinity’s educational excellence is the close personal encounter between professor and student.

In 2007-2008, Trinity boasted one of the highest alumni-giving percentages in the country, with 55.4 percent of alumni making donations to the college. Trinity has received a four-star rating, the highest possible, from Charity Navigator in recognition of the college’s fundraising efficiency and sound fiscal management.

Major Fundraiser: Trinity is engaged in the largest fundraising effort in its 186-year history. The overarching goals are to expand access to students of talent and promise, sustain the excellence of Trinity’s faculty, and revitalize the college’s physical environment.

On July 1, the college reached the mid-point in a six-year timetable for its dual fundraising campaigns, the $350 million-Cornerstone campaign and $50 million-Legacy campaign. The combined fundraising efforts of the two campaigns have exceeded $200 million.
