Trinity College enrolls most diverse class in history

Trinity College has enrolled its most diverse incoming class of freshman while also raising their academic acceptance scores for the class of 2022, school officials said.

Hartford’s private liberal arts college recently enrolled 609 of 6,112 applicants from 35 states and 35 countries, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Trinity will now serve students from 72 countries, the school said.

Trinity’s class of 2020 includes 21 percent more students at the top of its academic rating scale compared to last year’s incoming class. Meanwhile, the class includes 12 presidential scholars, the school’s highest academic distinction.

The incoming class, with its split male-to-female ratio, also notched other school records, including the highest-ever percentages of international students and first-generation college students, each at 15 percent.

Angel B. Perez, vice president for enrollment and student success, said the incoming class is Trinity’s most diverse in history, as 21 percent of enrollees are domestic students of color and 54 percent are from outside New England.

Trinity’s acceptance rate this year was 33 percent and 30 percent of applicants accepted their offer of admission.

Trinity College made headlines earlier this year when it announced it would for the first time in school history, raise tuition — inclusive of room, board and annual fees — to more than  $70,000 beginning in 2018-2019.

Almost 50 percent of applicants did not submit standardized test scores. Trinity officials said the school is in its third year as a test-optional institution as research indicates test scores aren’t the best indicator of success in college vs. high school grades.
