Travelers offering discounts for ‘smart’ homes

A smartphone app that alerts you when smoke detectors and similar devices engage could help you save money on your homeowners insurance policy.

The Travelers Cos. announced Wednesday that customers with qualifying “smart home” devices are now eligible for a discount on their policies. Smoke detectors and security systems that alert homeowners through their smartphones may qualify for the insurer’s Protective Device discount, which it has rolled out countrywide.

Elaine Montgomery-Baisden, chief underwriting officer of personal insurance at Travelers, said smart homes with a variety of connected devices create a safer environment.

The company has been testing connected devices for some time, including through its role as .exclusive insurance sponsor of the CNET Smart Home in Louisville, Kentucky, which is analyzing how smart home products behave, interact and test in everyday environments.
