Travelers lifts tourney donations to $1.08M

Kenny Perry is the big winner of the 2009 Travelers Championship, and so too are charities supported by the annual golf tournament in Cromwell.

Sponsor Travelers Cos. announced today the Travelers Foundation is raising the tourney’s total charitable contribution by another $330,000, to $1.08 million for 2009 — an amount equal to Perry’s purse.

On Sunday, Perry captured his 14th PGA Tour title at TPC River Highlands with a 22-under score of 258.

This added contribution is in addition to the previous commitments from the company and its employees through Birdies for Charity. This year, more than 120 Connecticut charitable organizations will benefit from the Travelers Championship, the insurer said.

“We’re honored to have Kenny Perry as this year’s champion of the Travelers Championship,” said Travelers Chairman and CEO Jay Fishman. “But the principal winners of this tournament are the designated charities, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and the Greater Hartford Jaycees Foundation.

Reader response:

“Jay Fishman and Andy Bessette, of the Travelers, deserve non stop applause for their continued commitment to Connecticut’s needy by rescuing and strengthening our state’s annual PGA tournament, which is nothing short of a miracle, given our economy.

Speaking of the economy, Tiger Woods appears to be too busy counting his $110 million in annual earnings to notice that the handful of tournaments he continues to ignore are the one’s who would benefit the most from his presence. Wake up Tiger! Become a TRUE Ambassador of the game.” — Tony Terzi, Diversified Building Services LLC
