The Travelers Cos. announced today a four-year extension of its sponsorship of the Travelers Championship golf tournament through 2014.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell also was introduced as honorary chairwoman of this year’s golf event for June 22-28 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
Travelers signed on as a title sponsor of the PGA event in 2007. The original sponsor pact was due to expire in 2010.
Officials said attendance to the televised Travelers Championship has grown to more than 225,000 fans annually, and generates more than $20 million to Connecticut through hotel stays, construction contracts, taxes and other expenditures. The tournament purse is $6 million.
“Now, more than ever, our state can truly benefit from the positive economic impact and charity funds that result from this tournament,” Rell said at today’s announcement in Hartford.
The Travelers Championship contributes all net proceeds to Connecticut charities, primarily The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, which serves children suffering from cancer and other serious diseases, and the Greater Hartford Jaycees, a leadership development and community service organization. In addition, the tournament offers fundraiser programs so that every charity in the state can use event as a way to raise funds.
Connecticut has hosted the PGA event since 1952.
