Travelers Championship begins this week with nation’s top golfer, defending champ

The Travelers Championship tees off this week featuring the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world and this year’s PGA Championship winner.

The Travelers Championship is taking over the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell this week, with competition play scheduled for Thursday through Sunday. Organizers said this year’s tournament features 2022 Masters winner and No. 1-ranked player in the world Scottie Scheffler and 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, reigning PGA TOUR Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay, and other top golfers including Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth.

Defending Travelers Championship winner Harris English returns to the course this year with hopes to repeat as champion. Seven other previous winners are also included in this year’s field of 156 golfers.

The event will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. CBS will then provide live coverage from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. PGA TOUR Live on ESPN+ will offer expanded live coverage Thursday through Sunday.

Ticketed spectators will be allowed on the tournament grounds beginning Wednesday, and organizers said there will be special events held throughout the week starting with the Travelers Celebrity Pro-Am. Those scheduled to compete in the pro-am include: Dane DeHaan; Christopher Jackson; Bill Murray; Chris Berman; Doug Flutie; Dan Orlovsky; Andre Tippett; Tim Wakefield; Geno Auriemma; Chris Dailey; and Jim Mora, among others.

As has been customary since Travelers became the title sponsor for the tournament in 2007, all net proceeds are donated to local nonprofits in New England. This year’s primary charitable beneficiary is The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford.

Organizers said that since 2007, the Travelers Championship has generated more than $22.5 million for more than 800 nonprofits throughout New England, including more than $2.2 million for 125 organizations last year.
