The CEO of Travelers, which has significant Hartford operations, disclosed Thursday that he has been diagnosed with a neuromuscular condition.
Jay Fishman said in a note to employees posted on the insurer’s website that he had experienced back pain for some time.
“While fortunately it has so far been slow progressing, you may soon see me with a cane or other gear to help me get around,” Fishman said. “You should know that I feel good and, with the full support of our board of directors, nothing about this circumstance changes my ability or plan to continue as Chairman and CEO. I remain fully engaged and committed.”
He didn’t specify what condition he has.
Most neuromuscular disorders are incurable, but doctors can relieve symptoms with treatment, according to Indiana University’s Neuroscience Center.
There are many types of neuromuscular diseases, including Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and muscular dystrophy, among others.
