Travelers’ 2Q profits down on storms

The Travelers Cos., which has significant Hartford operations, said its second-quarter net income fell 26 percent, largely due to wind and hail storms in several regions of the country.

The insurer booked $683 million in profits, or $1.95 per diluted share, down from $925 million, or $2.41 in the prior-year quarter.

Net written premiums for the quarter totaled $6.16 billion, up from $5.82 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Catastrophic losses totaled $436 million, up from a loss of $340 million.

The year-over-year comparison was also impacted by a $122 million after-tax gain in the second quarter last year from tax and legal settlements.
