Trash agency ordered to cut fees to 70 towns

Waterbury judge who had ordered the state’s trash authority to pay $35.8 million dollars to 70 towns and cities, has now ordered it to reduce its trash collection fees.

Superior Court Judge Dennis G. Eveleigh ruled Thursday that the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority is overcharging the municipalities a total of $6.7 million in tipping fees.

A CRRA spokesman says an appeal is likely.

Last month the state Supreme Court upheld Eveleigh’s earlier ruling that the towns were being unfairly penalized in excess fees to make up for losses incurred when the CRRA illegally loaned $220 million to the Enron Corp. seven years ago.

The loan to Enron caused financial problems for CRRA and it increased tipping fees.
