Training program readies workers for manufacturing jobs

An upcoming training program can help people score high-paying jobs in the manufacturing industry.

While there are manufacturing jobs available in the state, many remain vacant because candidates often don’t have the necessary skills to fill them. The program aims to also help area manufacturers by providing this key training.

Workforce Alliance, based in New Haven, recently announced registration is now open for the next series of its “Skill Up for Manufacturing” program.

The free, five-week pre-apprentice training program was created to expand the state’s manufacturing workforce pipeline. It includes a mixture of hybrid classroom and hands-on training, with the coursework developed in conjunction with area manufacturers.

It connects unemployed or underemployed members of the workforce with manufacturers who are hiring.

There are many manufacturing companies looking for workers. The alliance’s website, at workforcealliance.biz, currently advertises openings at companies such as Chabaso Bakery, Bio-Med Devices, Brook & Whittle, Tangen Bioscience and Medtronic, for example.

According to Workforce Alliance, more than 130 students have completed the program since October, and have been hired by area manufacturers, such as Lab Security Systems Corporation, Universal Thread Grinding and Microboard Processing Inc.

The organization has also made pandemic-related changes, such as providing online skills training and virtual job coaching sessions and hiring events.

The upcoming “Skill Up for Manufacturing” sessions include:

March 1 – April 2, 2021, at Middlesex Community College & Vinal Technical High School in Middletown.

Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, and class size is limited. The Workforce Alliance is also looking for more area manufacturers to participate in the program.
