Toyota offers up fuel cell patents

Auto maker Toyota, which is working with Air Liquide to open hydrogen fueling stations in Connecticut and other Northeast states, said it’s offering up thousands of its hydrogen-fuel-cell patents royalty free in order to spur innovation on the next generation of green cars.

Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai, is set for a fall launch in California.

The car maker said it is making available 5,680 patents because fuel cell vehicles will only be successful if manufacturers, regulators, academia and energy providers collaborate in new ways.

Toyota announced a deal with Air Liquide in November to develop and supply a dozen hydrogen fueling stations in the Northeast to support the introduction of the Mirai.
