In 2004, Portland resident Andy Bauer, founder and chairman of the Portland Clean Energy Task Force, asked the town to take an honest look at the impacts of traditional energy sources. It became clear that clean energy systems and energy efficiency initiatives offered both immediate and long term benefits, from reduced emissions to energy independence. To use a food analogy, we had been on a junk food diet. Our 20 percent by 2010 Clean Energy commitment and EPA Energy Efficiency Challenge represent far healthier choices.
Environmentally conscious practices reap multiple benefits. The Valley View School photovoltaic array will return approximately $2,500 this year to Portland. Our energy efficiency initiatives utilize local companies and are saving tens of thousands of dollars annually. These actions avoid thousands of tons of greenhouse gases and other harmful emissions.
