Town Council approves zone change for mixed-use development in West Hartford Center

The West Hartford Town Council on Wednesday approved a zone change for several properties in West Hartford Center, paving the way for The Arapahoe Group’s mixed-use development to move forward.

The council, in an 8-1 vote, granted the developer’s request to rezone the parcels – 27-43 and 53-65 LaSalle Road; 12 Arapahoe Road and 1001 Farmington Ave. – from residential to commercial (Central Business District) with a Special Development District designation.

The developer has proposed constructing two buildings with 64 high-end condominiums and 20 apartments, including four reserved for workforce housing.

Two of the three existing structures on the properties will be demolished to make way for the project. The ground-floors will feature commercial space, and a parking garage will be constructed.

Some residents opposed the application, citing concerns about the addition of more vehicles to the already heavily trafficked West Hartford Center.

As part of the conditions of approval, the developer will be required to pay the town $150,000 for traffic-calming measures on Arapahoe Road and Woodrow Street.
