Top PGA Tour golfer Thomas commits to Travelers Championship

Still five months away, the Travelers Championship on Monday announced another high-profile golfer for its 2019 tournament.

Justin Thomas, the 2017 PGA Tour Player of the Year, and No. 4 player in the world golf rankings, informed tournament officials he will make a fifth consecutive appearance at Cromwell’s TPC River Highlands in June.

The announcement comes a week after Bruce Koepka, currently the second-ranked golfer and reigning PGA player of the year, announced he would participate in the 2019 event from June 17 to 23. Thomas and Koepka are the tournament’s first two commitments.

Thomas, 25, struggled in the final round of the 2018 Travelers tournament, finishing tied in 56th overall. As a 20-year-old amateur in 2013, he tied for 30th and recorded his best finish at the Travelers Championship in 2016, tying for third.

Thomas, a member of the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup team, has nine career PGA Tour victories, and recorded his best season in 2016-17 when he had five wins and won the season-long FedExCup points race. He won another three PGA Tour events during the 2017-18 season.

The winner of the 2019 Travelers Championship will earn nearly $1.3 million and 500 points in the FedExCup standings. The total purse is worth $7.2 million.

As typical, this year’s tournament will broadcast nationally on the Golf Channel and CBS.

In 2018, Bubba Watson won his third Travelers Championship title as the tournament generated over $2 million for about 130 charities.
