A top credit union CEO is calling it a career.
Keith A. Wiemert at the end of this month is retiring as president and CEO of Middletown-based Ellafi Federal Credit Union after 28 years leading the institution through major changes and growth.
Wiemert took the helm in 1997, when the credit union — then called Middlesex Schools Federal Credit Union — managed about $40 million in assets. Today, Ellafi has more than $175 million in assets and has undergone three rebrands as it expanded membership and reach.
The most recent rebrand came in 2024, when the former Seasons Federal Credit Union changed its name to Ellafi and announced a new focus on serving women customers.
Wiemert said at the time the move was meant to “reinvent our credit union for the next generation,” as smaller institutions face pressure to distinguish themselves in a consolidating industry.
During his tenure, Wiemert guided the credit union through its transition from a single-sponsor institution to a community-chartered cooperative serving Middlesex County and nearby towns. He also oversaw three mergers and helped expand offerings to include mortgage lending, credit and debit cards, and digital banking.
Beyond the credit union, Wiemert served on the board of the Credit Union League of Connecticut, including a term as chairman, and was active in local civic groups such as the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.
Betsy Sommers and Robyn Swanson are serving as co-acting CEOs while the board conducts a search for Wiemert’s successor.
