Top 3 potential sites identified for new Hartford federal courthouse

The U.S. General Services Administration has identified three potential sites for a new federal courthouse in Hartford, but the city’s mayor said he looks forward to having a role in finalizing the location decision.

The U.S. General Services Administration’s announcement comes after Congress authorized nearly $334 million earlier this year to go toward site acquisition, design and construction of a new 281,000-square-foot courthouse. The building will eventually replace the Abraham A. Ribicoff U.S. Court House on Main Street.

Based on a recent “Request for Expressions of Interest” for potential sites, the finalist properties are:

  • The property at the corner of Allyn, Church and High streets
  • 10 Ford Street
  • The property at the corner of Buckingham Street, Capitol Avenue, and Hudson and West streets

Now, the federal General Services Administration will analyze these sites and receive public comment. Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin was among the first to comment on the announcement of the list of potential sites.

“We appreciate the federal government’s commitment to building a new courthouse in Hartford, and in the right location and with the right design, a courthouse could complement our economic development work,” Bronin said in a statement. “That said, it would be a shame to put a tax exempt courthouse in a location where there are active efforts underway to pursue taxable residential development, and we look forward to working with the GSA and our federal partners as the site selection process moves forward.”
