Three Sacred Heart Univ. programs secure accreditation

A trio of programs at Sacred Heart University’s Jack Welch College of Business & Technology,  including computer science, information technology and game design, have garnered accreditation.

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology granted the accreditation status.

According to the Fairfield-based Sacred Heart, its game design and development program is now the second of its kind to be accredited in the world.

The accreditation is retroactive to 2019, allowing graduates in the past four years to add it to their credentials.

Samah Senbel, an assistant professor in the School of Computer Science & Engineering who led the application, said, “Coming from an accredited program will open up job opportunities for our students and alumni.”

The university started pursuing the accreditation in 2015. The application process included campus visits from accreditors, curriculum revisions and frequent updates.

One of those revisions was the addition of physics classes to the computer science and game design curricula.

“We needed to increase the level of math our students mastered,” Senbel said. “Some people thought we were making the course too hard, but our students rose to the occasion.”

Catherine McCabe, dean of the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology, said the accreditation of the three programs is expected to elevate the college’s status on a national and international level.
