Thieves make off with computers out of DMV van

State motor vehicle officials say three state computers were stolen from a DMV customer service van while the vehicle was at a repair shop.

The computers contained listings and times of fees paid for driver’s license renewals. The DMV says it is working with license program vendor, Viisage of Billerica, Mass., to determine if any personal information was among the data. The software program is designed to purge data nightly.

The 1999 custom-made Winnebago broke down on Dec. 5 and was towed to Interstate Ford in Hartford for repairs. DMV officials picked up the van on Dec. 14 and noticed it has been vandalized and that the computers were missing.

State police are investigating.

In August, a state tax department laptop containing the Social Security numbers and names of more than 100,000 Connecticut taxpayers was stolen from a state worker’s car in Long Island.
