Theater group buys Blake Street building

A Westville theater group has purchased a Blake Street building down the road from where members currently hold performances.

Ian Alderman, artistic director of the award-winning A Broken Umbrella Theatre, bought the free-standing, 4,806-square-foot building at 280 Blake for $280,000 from GenMike Realty, LLC and principal Gennaro Savino.

The building is listed as a retail or light industrial site.

A Broken Umbrella Theatre got its start in Allentown, Pa., but has been rooted in New Haven for almost 20 years, with Westville and Edgewood Park as its backdrop.

Performance locations are often listed at 446A Blake St., closer to the intersection with Route 63.

The Blake Street building will give the theatrical group a physical presence in the community, to further its mission and commitment to “enhancing the vitality of our community, supporting the creative growth of our ensemble, and presenting compelling theatrical events with a commitment to aesthetic rigor, that are inspired by the unique history of New Haven,” according to an announcement.

Senior Commercial Broker Carl Russell of North Haven-based Pearce Real Estate represented the seller. The buyer was represented by Renee Stevens of Press/Cuozzo Realtors in Hamden.
