The most iconic job in Connecticut

It may not be surprising that the most iconic job in Connecticut revolves around the financial services sector.

The financial website 24/7WallSt.com reports that Connecticut’s most iconic job is insurance actuary. It says there are 1,180 employed in the field in the state, earning an average salary of $105,470. Actuaries are nearly five times more common in Connecticut then they are across the country, the report says.

Using workforce composition data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the location quotient of every job in every state. A location quotient is a measure of relative concentration, which compares the state and national workforce compositions of a particular job. A state’s most iconic job is defined as the job with the highest location quotient, or the most unusually common occupation in that state.

Martin Kohli, chief regional economist at the BLS, told 24/7 Wall St. that a state’s most iconic job is often within its largest industry.
