A survey by property and casualty insurer The Hartford found that 42 percent of small business owners with full-time workers offer no benefits, while 36 percent share benefit costs with their employees.

Braun Research conducted 2,000 interviews with the owners of for-profit business across the country with fewer than 100 full-time employees.
