Property and casualty insurer The Hartford said it is donating $3.5 million over three years to a national organization that provides opportunities for athletes to participate in adaptive sports.
The Hartford-based insurance company said the partnership with Move United includes ongoing donations to local adaptive sports programs of equipment – which can cost 15 times as much for able-bodied peers.
Adaptive sports are played by people with disabilities, in a recreational or competitive format, and often run parallel to typical sports.
The Hartford is working to increase participation in adaptive sports by making competitions, local events and equipment more accessible to youth and adult athletes, according to Claire Burns, chief marketing and communications officer of The Hartford. The goal is to help remove cost as a barrier to participation, Burns said.
The partnership also includes The Hartford’s Adaptive Sports Competition Series.
The Hartford said it has supported adaptive sports for more than 30 years. Over the last five years, the company has donated more than 5,000 pieces of adaptive sports equipment in more than 40 communities across the country in connection with Move United, according to the announcement.
