Mission: Established in 1941, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain connects donors with causes in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. We do this by raising resources and developing partnerships that make a measurable difference in the quality of life in each of these communities.
Background: An independent, nonprofit organization, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain currently invests and administers more than 140 funds with a market value of more than $25 million. CFGNB annually distributes approximately $1 million in grants to humanitarian, educational and cultural organizations in their four-town service area. They oversee charitable vehicles ranging from scholarships and donor-advised funds to the Catalyst Fund, which invites people to pool their resources to learn about important issues facing the communities and jointly choose and award an annual grant to a nonprofit that addresses this issue. As a community foundation, CFGNB serves people from all walks of life, offering easily understood charitable options and an in-depth knowledge of the needs and resources in their four-town service area.
Community foundations, such as CFGNB, are one of the fastest growing sectors of philanthropy in the country, numbering approximately 700 across the U.S. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal (4.22.09) noted that a growing number of donors are turning to their local community foundations to establish donor advised funds as they take a more active role in determining how their money is being used.
