The Arc Of Quinebaug Valley

Mission: The Arc of Quinebaug Valley Inc. is a nonprofit human service agency committed to supporting individuals — and their families — with intellectual, developmental and other life affecting disabilities. The Arc provides opportunities through advocacy and supports for work, play and education so each person experiences personal growth, dignity, respect, choice, and greater independence to live life to its fullest. The Arc of Quinebaug Valley, Inc. is a member of Connecticut Association of Nonprofits.

Background: In 1952, two local women realized they shared a vision — the dream of a better life for their daughters who had developmental disabilities. By the end of the following year, these two women had organized and held the first official meeting of the Windham County Association for Retarded Children. In the 1980s, the agency opened its first office with a professional staff. At its present location in Danielson, the vision of our original founders continues to be realized. The Arc of Quinebaug Valley Inc. — as it is now known — supports more than 125 people and their families, employ 98 full and part-time staff and covers over 15 towns, across 350 square miles.

Programs: The Arc offers children a young adult transition program, mentoring and extended year program. Our vocational training program assists individuals in their efforts to attain employment — teaching job readiness skills and creating work options. Our residential programs provide supports in group and individual homes, and our retirement services program provides activities for seniors. The Arc contracts with schools, Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, CT Department of Social Services and CT Department of Developmental Services. Through diverse programs, the Arc focuses on the unique abilities of each individual and on what they can accomplish by teaching self advocacy and providing opportunities for success.

Fundraisers: There are four major events: the Annual Appeal begins in May; the 23rd annual golf tournament takes place June 28 at Foster Country Club; the 13th annual Rubber Duckie Race takes place Aug. 14 in Putnam; and the 4th annual Bartender Night will be at J.D. Coopers in Putnam in October. For information, contact: Linda Lamoureux, administrator of development and public relations, at 860-774-2827.
