The Arc Of Connecticut

Mission: The Arc of Connecticut is committed to protecting the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and related developmental disabilities and to promoting opportunities for their full inclusion in the life of their communities. 

Background: The Arc of Connecticut is a 57-year-old statewide advocacy organization. Its 23 local chapters serve approximately 2,700 individuals and family members, providing day services, residential services and support, recreation program, respite services, self advocacy, employment services, family supports, birth-to-three program, school-to-work transition program, community inclusion program and senior services. Major Fundraiser: “Dancing with The Arc,” a fun, dance-filled evening to benefit The Arc of Connecticut, will be held March 26 from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry Street, Plantsville.

The fundraising event kicks off with a dance competition emceed by Colin McEnroe, CT public radio host / Courant columnist / blogger / author. Dancers will be critiqued by Courant columnist Susan Campbell and two other judges. Five couples will dance in the competition, including Bill Curry, former gubernatorial candidate and White House advisor to Bill Clinton, and Dawn Manogue; David Shaw, disability rights attorney, and his wife Valentine; and Varian Salters, self advocate coordinator, Department of Developmental Services, and Mary Gonzales, president of People First of Connecticut. The gala evening also includes a light supper, followed by a group dance lesson with Jessica and Clemens Lengenfelder, owners of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in West Hartford. Music will be provided by DJ Jon Eastman. Creative black tie is the suggested attire. Tickets at $75/person can be purchased at www.arcofct.org or by calling (860) 246-6400.
