Ten small businesses in Hartford share in $75K grants

Ten small businesses in one Hartford neighborhood undergoing revitalization have been awarded nearly $75,000 in federal micro-grants, Mayor Luke Bronin announced Friday.

The companies that received Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area (NRSA) awards in the Parkville neighborhood include Shev’s Quality Water, Gus Teles Hairstyling, ABC Telecom, Euro Mini Market, Tax Smart, Casa Tony, New Corner Deli, El Poeta de los Sandwiches, Latina Fashion, and Brazilian Touch.

Since 2012, a portion of the Parkville neighborhood has been designated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a NRSA, which falls under the Federal Community Development Block Grant program. This year, the city of Hartford chose to focus the final round of NRSA funding on support for local small businesses.

“Each of these businesses are longstanding local businesses that, together, help make the Parkville neighborhood vibrant and strong,” said Bronin.

Grant recipients were selected through a competitive application process administered by the Department of Development Services.

“As small business owners, we are often struggling with finance to bring more clients to our businesses, said Melody Do, the owner of Tax Smart Enterprise. “My business will double in revenue with the help of this grant.”
