Tech council’s coding challenge culminates next month

A Connecticut Technology Council program aimed at connecting employers in need to tech talent with computer programmers at the state’s universities will culminate in a finals event early next month.

The council’s Skills Challenge, which was developed with funding from the state’s CTNext entrepreneurial initiative, will hold its final contest and a job fair April 2 at Yale School of Management in New Haven.

CTC, which has held preliminary contests at 10 schools around the state, has winnowed the field to the 50 best programmers it could find. More than 200 students participated, CTC said, and all will be listed in a directory made available to employers seeking workers.

In the wake of General Electric’s headquarters announcement earlier this year, CTC CEO Bruce Carlson said he hoped the Skills Challenge could play a role in ensuring Connecticut companies find the talent they need here in the state, where the populace is among the most educated in the country.

The three winning teams on April 2 will receive cash prizes ($5,000 for first place). Companies participating in the ensuing job fair will include Hartford’s Insurity, Avon’s iDevices, Norwalk’s Datto, and Bridgeport’s GoECart, among others.
