Team Quinnipiac teeing up after Title IX ruling

Quinnipiac University in Hamden will add golf and rugby to its women’s volleyball team and its competitive cheer squad as it complies with a court order to bring its athletic programs into compliance with federal gender-equity requirements, The Associated Press reports.

Under a plan filed in federal court on Wednesday, Quinnipiac also proposes adding women’s golf and rugby teams to provide more athletic opportunities for women.

Several volleyball players and their coach sued Quinnipiac last year after the school announced it would eliminate volleyball for budgetary reasons and replace it with a competitive cheer squad.

This summer Judge Stefan Underhill ruled that cheerleading cannot be considered a sport for Title IX purposes. He ordered it to keep the volleyball team and come up with a compliance plan.
