TD Charitable Foundation donates $20K to Prevention Partnership

The TD Charitable Foundation recently presented The Governor’s Prevention Partnership with $20,000 to support positive youth behavior initiatives. The Governor’s Prevention Partnership is a nonprofit, public-private alliance that, for more than 20 years, has sought to build a strong, healthy future workforce through leadership in mentoring and prevention of youth violence and bullying, underage drinking, and substance abuse. The Partnership is the only statewide organization focusing exclusively on prevention issues affecting youth.

Girl Scouts CT receives summer program grant

Girl Scouts of Connecticut has received an $8,788 grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, which will be used to fund the summer fun camp program offered for girls at the E.B. Kennelly School in Hartford.

Last year, about 60 girls were served by the program, which provides leadership training and skills.

The grant, which includes support from the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund at the Hartford Foundation, also provides for a book allowance to support literary activities as part of this summer’s offerings.

UHart Entrepreneurial Center receives $100K grant

The Entrepreneurial Center (EC) at the University of Hartford recently received a $100,000 community development block grant from the city of Hartford for the Hartford Small Business Technical Assistance Program.

This initiative is designed to support Hartford’s One City One Plan goal to help existing businesses remain in Hartford and expand their economic prospects. Over the past two years, EC staff has worked with 41 Hartford-based businesses, providing free training, advising and technical assistance customized to their goals.

Business owners have worked on improving their social media campaigns, general marketing strategies, operations, sales, financial management and access to capital, and human resource processes.

Charter Oak awards $51,500 to nonprofits

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union’s Community Giving Program recently awarded $51,500 to nonprofit organizations in Windham and New London counties.

More than 35 nonprofits benefitted from the Community Giving Program, including 10 grant recipients: The Little Angels Program; Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board Inc.; The Stonington Community Center Inc.; Thames Area Citizen Advocacy Program Inc.; Furniture Bank of Southeastern Connecticut; Waterford Country School; Sacred Heart School; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Connecticut; Otis Library; and the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut.

Charter Oak’s giving priorities generally focus on education and training; health programs; human services; housing; community development and revitalization; and the arts.

Bank of America awards Hartford Public Library $7,500 grant

The Hartford Public Library was recently awarded a $7,500 grant from Bank of America in support of the Teen Leaders Initiative. 

The initiative provides Hartford teens a basic understanding of what is needed to achieve success in both their academic and working careers with a strong emphasis on career education, job readiness skills, workplace expectations, project management, and personal finance skills.

The grant will provide for the hiring of five teens that will work with library staff for nine weeks at five branches during the summer months. 

Teen leaders will attend a series of educational workshops that will improve their ability to make positive personal, academic and career decisions.
