Tattoo removal business expands in Connecticut

Removery, which zaps unwanted tattoos with lasers, has expanded its state presence with a new location in North Haven.

The new studio opened June 20, in North Haven Crossing, at 460 Universal Drive, Suite 05A, next door to a Five Below. Its new space is about 1,790 square feet, with two treatment rooms and one consultation room.

It is the chain’s 149th location and its second in Connecticut. It also has a studio in South Windsor. Removery’s 149 locations include 129 in the United States, eight in Canada and 12 in Australia.

Carmen VanderHeiden Brodie, a founder and vice president of clinical operations, said there are plans over the next five years to grow to 350 locations.

“Connecticut will be part of that expansion,” she said.

Reba Goodrow, a laser specialist with Removery in Connecticut, said she was attracted to the field and the company because it is an opportunity to get to know people and the reasons behind their decision to remove their tattoos.

“It is rewarding to be a part of changing someone’s story,” Goodrow said. “Sometimes I’m helping to remove that pesky ex’s name and other times I’m helping to fade an old tattoo for a new piece that better fits a client’s current style.”

According to VanderHeiden Brodie, there are many reasons people decide to get rid of tattoos.

“The overall theme is that their outside doesn’t match what they feel anymore,” she said. “They want the cover of the book to match what is inside.”

The company has a program to remove some tattoos for free, such as for former prison inmates and gang members who are trying to rebuild their lives.

Removery uses the PicoWay laser system to remove tattoos, and the process typically takes about 8 to 10 visits.

The company, founded in 2019 and based in Austin, Texas, has a Clinical Advisory Board focused on advancements in tattoo removal.
