The management of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra has settled an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. It was cited for failing and refusing to bargain in good faith.
The settlement allows the symphony’s musicians to know for certain when and how often they will be expected to perform as required in the contract between Local 400 and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. The Connecticut Valley Federation of Musicians, Local 400 of the American Federation of Musicians, represents approximately 600 professional musicians in central Connecticut.
As part of the settlement, the symphony must now issue individual service contracts to all contracted musicians, as it was obligated to do last May 1. Details of the settlement include posting a legally required notice in the workplace of the violations that have occurred, refraining from such activities in the future, and upholding the musicians’ rights as provided for in the National Labor Relations Act, according to the statement from the musicians’ union.
Additional unfair labor practice complaints are pending. However, the union said its membership is willing to meet to reach a settlement on the remaining contract issues.
