Shoppers visiting downtown New Haven for the back-to-school season have an opportunity for a free ice cream with a $50 purchase during the month of August.
The Shops at Yale has partnered with Elm City ice cream shops Ashley’s and Arethusa Farm Dairy to offer the promotion, which aims to attract more customers to local retailers.
David DelVecchio, director of real estate asset management at Yale, said the university has offered a free ice cream promotion in the past and it has proven to be popular.
“Gift-with-purchase promotions like this are a great way to reward our loyal customers and support local merchants at the same time,” DelVecchio said, in an announcement.

According to DelVecchio, several merchants are offering sales in August, and Connecticut Tax Free Week runs the week of Aug. 15 through Aug. 21, offering more potential savings to customers.
Yale University has developed several other strategies to boost the local economy during the pandemic in recent months, such as the Window Art Stroll & Contest and a Father’s Day giveaway promotion.
This latest promotion is being offered in August to coincide with shoppers seeking clothing, accessories and electronics in advance of returning to school and work.
Guests at The Shops at Yale can get a free small cup or cone at either Ashley’s Ice Cream, 280 York St., or Arethusa Farm Dairy, 1020 Chapel St.
To qualify, customers need to show a same-day paper receipt of $50 or more from one of several participating retailers. These include: Apple, Atticus Bookstore Café (retail only), Barnes & Noble/The Yale Bookstore, Book Trader Cafe (retail only), Campus Customs, Derek Simpson Goldsmith, dwell New Haven, FatFace, Grey Matter Books, Hull’s Art Supply and Framing, idiom Boutique, J.Crew, L.L.Bean, Lou Lou Boutiques, lululemon, Neville Wisdom’s Fashion Design Studio, Patagonia, Raggs for Men & Women, Shiana Hair (retail only), Sneaker Junkies and Urban Outfitters.
Customers may also use their shopping receipts for up to two hours of free parking in The Shops at Yale’s parking lots, at 255 Crown St. and 56 Broadway.
