Susan G. Komen regional affiliates to merge

Susan G. Komen Southern New England and Susan G. Komen Vermont-New Hampshire will merge into one group, the Susan G. Komen New England, the organizations announced.

The merger will be effective “in upcoming days,” said Lori van Dam, Susan G. Komen New England’s CEO.

The new organization will maintain offices and staff in Farmington, Westborough, Mass., and Manchester, Vt., as well as Races for the Cure in Boston; Westport, Conn.; Portsmouth, NH; Hartford, Conn.; and Manchester, Vt.

The combined organization will lower administrative costs while increasing the impact it has on local families facing breast cancer, van Dam said.

Recently announced by Susan G. Komen, the organization’s goal is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2026. To accomplish this, the organization plans to improve access to quality and timely cancer care for the underserved and enhance Komen’s research focus on lethal and particularly aggressive breast cancers.

Komen New England will be governed by its local board of directors, ensuring that residents facing the greatest burden from breast cancer have access to necessary resources.
