Survey shows support for $15 minimum wage

A new poll commissioned by a national labor union finds strong support for raising the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour in gradual increases. The poll was commissioned by the national offices of SEIU, the parent of SEIU 1199.

Approximately 61 percent of voters favor an increase in the minimum wage by a dollar an hour starting in 2018 until it reaches $15 an hour in 2022, while 36 percent oppose it. The state’s minimum wage is slated to increase to $10.10 an hour in Jan. 2017. It currently stands at $9.60.

The survey was conducted by Abacus Polling of Northampton, Mass. From Feb. 25 to Feb. 29, 400 people were surveyed. The poll has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.

Registered Democrats show the strongest support for the increase at 75 percent. The poll also found 66 percent of women favor the proposal.
