Subway sets hiring target of 50K N. American jobs

In response to both record unemployment levels across the country as well as recent layoffs and reported turmoil at its corporate headquarters in Milford, Subway International has announced an ambitious new hiring target.

On Thursday the franchise giant announced that its local franchise owners will seek to hire workers to fill approximately 50,000 jobs in North American Subway restaurants.

Subway said it hopes to broaden the brand’s community connections and help franchise owners recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis. With approximately 20,000 franchise owners in North America and across the globe, Subway stores are found in almost every community across the U.S. and Canada, the announcement noted.

Starting this summer at participating North American Subways, thousands of job opportunities will be available ranging from entry-level to management positions, the company said.

“As our business continues to see a growing demand for our value offerings, curbside pick-up and delivery, we are happy to support such a large-scale employment opportunity to meet the demands of our guests,” said Aidan Hay, Subway’s vice president of operations for North America, in the announcement.

“We’ve been fortunate that a majority of Subway restaurants remained open the past few months and are so appreciative to the franchise owners and their employees who have made that possible. For existing and new employees, it is important to us that each one feel valued and safe when working in our restaurants.”

Subway says it has rolled out appropriate safety procedures to protect restaurant employees and customers. Measures include working with third-party delivery partners to ensure contactless delivery, providing masks for employees, enforcing social distancing guidelines and increasing food safety procedures.

The employment target announcement came the same week that the sandwich chain announced the return of one of its most successful promotions ever — sort of. Participating Subways will once again offer the chain’s popular $5 footlong sub deal — as part of a two-for deal (two 12-inch sandwiches for $10).

The original $5 footlong promotion ran from 2008 to 2016. The promotion’s revival is, as they say, for limited time only.
