Milford sandwich chain Subway is planning a major overseas expansion with the hopes of opening 600 new stores in Britain and Ireland by 2015, Reuters reports.
Subway currently has about 1,423 stores in Britain and 99 in Ireland so the sandwich maker is aiming to become more dominant in both markets.
Subway officials told Reuters they are looking at non-traditional settings for their eateries including convenience stores, hospitals, airports and petrol stations, mirroring a strategy being pursued by British baker Greggs, which currently trades from about 1,550 stores.
Subway has more than 36,000 outlets in 98 countries — ranking as the world’s largest fast-food chain — and all stores are independently owned and operated by franchisees.
