Study pegs UConn’s economic impact at $3.39B

An economic impact analysis commissioned by UConn determined that the school generated $3.39 billion in economic activity in 2013.

Of that amount, $1.5 billion was direct spending — meaning spending by the flagship Storrs campus, UConn Health or any of the five satellite campuses, as well as by the system’s staff, visitors and 30,000 students.

The remaining $1.9 billion was indirect impact of UConn’s spending on Connecticut’s economy.

The study was performed by research and consulting firm Tripp Umbach using an economic model known as IMPLAN. It gathered data on capital and operational expenditures, jobs, payroll, benefits and taxes to reach its conclusions.

The study said UConn employed more than 10,500 people in fiscal 2013 and supported another 13,730 indirectly. The school paid $202.5 million in various taxes, and spent more than $242 million on research and development.

UConn said the analysis was conservative because it did not include non-operations variables such as the commercialization of research and development or attraction power.
