Study identifies CT’s most concentrated profession

Connecticut houses the headquarters and operations of numerous insurance companies, so it may come as no surprise to hear that the state’s most concentrated profession is closely related.

A study by CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. determined that actuary jobs are more than four times more concentrated in Connecticut compared to the national average.

“Concentrated occupations are typically tied to an industry that drives a regional economy,” Andrew Crapuchettes, CEO of EMSI, said in a statement.

The study determined the most concentrated job in each state using a measure called location quotient, which compares the percentage share of a state’s workforce in a given occupation to the rest of the country.

Concentration does not mean the jobs make up a large percentage of the overall workforce, the authors said. Connecticut had 1,141 actuaries in 2013, which represented just a small fraction of the state’s 1.6 million total jobs that year.

The median hourly wage for actuaries in the state last year was $51.22, the study said. That was lower than only two other concentrated occupations in the study — Texas petroleum engineers and Washington, D.C. political scientists.
