Study: CT smokers take financial hit

Smokers in Connecticut will pay one of the highest tolls in the country for smoking, according to a report this week by personal finance website WalletHub.

The total cost per year per smoker in Connecticut is $42,808, jumping to almost $2.2 million over a lifetime when weighing potential monetary losses from smoking, including lifetime annual costs of a pack of cigarettes per day, healthcare expenses, income losses and other costs, the study examined.

The yearly and lifetime costs were third highest in the nation, trailing only Massachusetts and New York, the study said.

In Connecticut, out-of-pocket cost per smoker is $170,513; financial opportunity cost per smoker is $1.4 million; healthcare cost per smoker is $274,272; income loss per smoker is $286,950; and other costs are $15,133, the study said.

Yearly and lifetime costs per smoker were lowest in Kentucky, roughly half the costs in Connecticut, WalletHub said.
