A new study suggests Connecticut is the second best place to live. Our neighbor to the north – Massachusetts – edges the state because of a slightly better unemployment rate in 2014.
The WallStreet24/7.com report focuses on Connecticut’s low poverty rate and long life expectancy as two factors making it a most livable state. Connecticut’s residents can expect, on average, to live to be 80.8 years old. That’s third best in the United States.
In only 10 states — all among the 25 best states to live in — the average resident can expect to live more than 80 years. To compare, the nationwide life expectancy at birth is 78.9 years.
Also working in the Nutmeg State’s favor is high incomes. The report says a typical household earns $70,048 each year, the fourth highest median household income in the nation.
That is, of course, offset by higher real estate prices. WallStreet24/7.com said, “Low poverty rates and high incomes often coincide with longer lives, and tended to be the case for Connecticut residents as well.” Connecticut’s 10.8 percent poverty rate is third lowest in the U.S. A typical home in Connecticut is valued at $267,200, well above the national median home value of $181,200.
Mississippi is ranked the worst state to live in with the highest unemployment rate in 2014 at 7.8 percent. Its residents also have the lowest life expectancy rate of 75 years.
