Study: 53 percent of CT high school grads leave state for college

More than half of Connecticut’s high school graduates leave the state to attend college, according to a study by Niche.com, which provides user reviews and other information on schools and communities.

That makes Connecticut the third largest exporter of college students, behind New Hampshire (58 percent) and Vermont (64 percent).

Across the country, 58 percent of students attend college within 100 miles of their hometown, while 72 percent remain in state, the study said.

New England states ranked highly as exporters of students. Niche said income levels, K-12 school quality, college cost and concentration of nearby colleges were all factors.

The study also found that students with higher SAT scores are more likely to migrate farther distances for college.

Niche used data from nearly 350,000 of its users collected between 2012 and this year.
