Streaming Wars: UConn announces new ‘sports-centric’ streaming network

The University of Connecticut is launching a new streaming service later this month that will feature live sports, highlights and original content from the school’s various athletic programs.

School officials announced Tuesday that UConn+ will be available through streaming services such as Apple TV, Amazon and Roku in addition to the UConn phone app and website. The “sports-centric” streaming application will showcase original and exclusive content such as “features, live events, profiles, coaches’ shows, highlights and other on-demand content,” according to information from the university.

The service, which school officials said has been in the works for more than a year, is expected to launch in late November.

UConn is partnering with LEARFIELD Studios to help with programming, but much of the shows and features will be developed internally at the university. One show, “THE BREAKDOWN,” will showcase the football program’s 2022 training camp in a five-part mini-series. Another, “THE STANDARD,” highlights the women’s basketball team.

UConn students not in athletics can participate, too. UConn Athletics and the university’s Digital Media and Design program in the School of Fine Arts partnered last fall to create an athletics creative agency, which will give students academic credits for work such as documentary film production and motion graphic design, school officials said in the announcement.

And while the new service is described as sports-centric by the school, it won’t feature just athletics. Other ideas include a talk-show podcast about the school’s people and programs. The school said “Worth Repeating,” an interview series hosted by President Radenka Maric, is already in production.

UConn’s existing multimedia production team in University Communications, will work on this non-sports related content.
