Stratford beach clean-up completed

Connecticut engineering firm Tighe & Bond has completed the $909,000 clean-up of Long Beach West in Stratford.

The clean-up, funded by the U.S. American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, took two years and was a high priority for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Audubon Society.

The remediation of the 1.5-mile shoreline called for cleaning up debris and hazardous materials within the 35-acre barrier beach. As part of the process, 60 abandoned buildings had to be demolished.

Tighe & Bond, with offices in Middletown and Shelton, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
