Officials say construction will start soon on a project to create a large residential and retail “town center” adjacent to the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs, The Associated Press reports.
A ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled Wednesday for the Storrs Center project in downtown Mansfield.
Its first two phases are expected to be completed in 2012 and 2013. It will eventually include apartments, retail stores, commercial property, pedestrian walkways, green spaces and conservation areas.
Planning has been under way for about 10 years for the project.
It’s a public-private partnership between developers and the Mansfield Downtown Partnership Inc., a nonprofit organization with representatives from local businesses, community groups, the town of Mansfield and UConn.
